I'm so sad I missed you in Missoula by such a short time (we swung by the Youniverse on our way out of town on the 9th), but I'm very excited to see you camping soon!

Yes! Working on the Out There podcast really showed me the power of unscripted versus scripted words.

I am curious to know what you might feel in 20 years when you watch these videos?!

I am curious too! When I watch videos that I filmed from about 5 years ago, I literally CRINGE. I have a lot of love for that version of me... but some of the stuff I said would never come out of my mouth now lol. That's one of the things that I do enjoy about keeping this 'diary' of sorts -- hopefully in 20 years, it'll still exist, and I can look back and watch it and have a lot of compassion for this version of me.

Do you have a preference for unscripted or scripted? For audio purposes, it's easier for me to read voiceovers of written word -- but I used to host a little podcast, which was entirely unscripted. I did find myself spending a lot of time editing out 'ums' and spaces lol.

Thanks for reading and listening, as always, Maria!

So for the scripted parts, we worked on β€œwriting for the ear” and editing that for months so that it would sound like conversational storytelling (we would do some edits on paper and some β€˜live’ and out loud). Then in some episodes we’d have interview tape where it it’s really important to have the interviewee speaking extemporaneously. It sounds more engaging!

Sometimes the β€œums” say a lot…. maybe you’d like to have a listen to Talia’s piece about the β€œum” … https://transom.org/2024/the-um-a-deep-dive/ [the piece starts at 7m 55s; the interview before and after is also good]

Oh, amazing, I can't wait to listen to this! I'm often very self conscious when I listen to myself talk -- not as much with 'ums', but I tend to throw in a lot of 'likes' or 'ok' - ha! I really do enjoy conversational storytelling and I do find myself getting 'annoyed' at podcasts when people are trying to play off (obviously scripted) lines as 'conversation'. Most recently, I listened to a podcast called 'My Fugitive Dad' -- it's a really cool true crime story about a heist, but one of the hosts does a lot of 'fake conversation' and it's obviously scripted, and I found myself enjoying the sections where she was just speaking candidly a lot more.
