This is just Beautifully written! You mentioned Captain Joe the other night we were together but I had no idea the impact. Thank you for sharing the details:)

Yes! He's been a true guiding light in my life over the past year. I really feel like so many people have been brought into my life in such serendipitous ways (like randomly joining a restaurant club at a restaurant an hour away from my house lol). Thanks for reading Jenny -- hope you see you soon!

We are happy that you came to see our Westport Lighthouse. We live on Cohassett Beach, just down the road from the lighthouse. You guys should have come by and had some tea with Sarah Lane and myself.

We truly enjoy your adventures.🙏🏼

Oh wow, yes we did go to Westport to visit the lighthouse, and it's one of my favorites. That entire ride is just so lovely -- we were there again this past summer on our ride around the Olympic Peninsula. Next time we head out that way, I will absolutely let you know!

I knew Captain Joe was CG, but I'm not sure I knew/remembered that he was a Captain of one of the ice breakers! Do you know which one (Polar Star, Polar Sea, or the Healy)? My Dad was the corpsman (in charge of sick bay) on the Polar Star for four years, making three trips south and one trip north, when I was in high school!

I'm always thankful when friends visit near home (Astoria) and share stories and pictures. That part of the Columbia is my very favorite river and body of water in the whole world. For a number of years, while healing my broken heart and soul, I worked at Coffee Girl, a coffee shop on one of the piers in Astoria. Watching the sunrise and sunset from the pier was salve for my soul.

Every time I see a Fresnel lens, I tell Daryl about how they were created by a guy named Fresnel for lighthouses. Not only does the shape of the lens help distribute the light, it also helps distribute the heat, making the lens last longer. They are also used in theatrical lighting! Even though theatres are moving to LED instruments, and therefore lighting instruments get less hot (traditional instruments often use 750 watt lamps, but sometimes 1000 watt or 550 watt lamps), there are still fresnel lenses used (however more common these days are PARnels, which are a hybrid between a par can [think old school concert lighting instruments that look like paint cans] and a fresnel).

Thank you, always, for sharing your words and your heart. My life is certainly better for having you in it. <3

Such a wonderful story! Somewhere in there is the connection you’ve got with Herman Melville, Chris Mills, Captain Joe, lighthouses and the sea.
