No typo but I realize the confusion. I submitted this after reading “Lookout: Love, Solitude, and Searching for Wildfire in the Boreal Forest” by Trina Moyles. I think Amanda might have recommended it in early 2024 and then it was chosen by Christine Reed’s book club - so I listened to the audiobook! I think Trina referred to herself as a “fire tower lookout” (the role) but it’s also the name for the physical structure?

I like how you interpreted the question and brought the fire tower to life :) I think Ian Chillag needs to read this!

This was my one of my favorites: “I’ve been here for so long, that sometimes I take the view for granted — but when people arrive, it always reminds me how special it is. For a few moments in my life, I’m able to see the world through their eyes again.”

Hi Maria -- Isn't it amazing how different interpretations of one word can create such different stories?! As soon as I read your answer, I immediately realized -- OH, a lookout can be a PERSON TOO!! But, in my mind, when I read the question -- I immediately thought of the structure -- which is what we, very often, call them here in the PNW. The 'structure' itself is often referred to as a Fire Lookout, because quite often they aren't on towers (Park Butte is simply a small hut strapped to a bunch of boulders). I could have taken this in an entirely different direction -- but I LOVE how it worked out. For the record -- with the lookout = person interpretation, I think I'd still definitely choose to spend a summer in a Fire Tower! Lots of solitude and time to meditate and enjoy the solitude of nature... and not nearly as much breathing in smoke!

I'm so glad you loved it, and thank YOU for submitting such a fun and inspiring question -- this was honestly the most fun I had writing in awhile. :)

I wonder if it's a Canadian thing, I know Trina, we studied Permaculture together! To me, a fire tower lookout is the person who sits in the fire tower and looks for the smoke!

I want to HEARTILY recommend the book to everyone in the Kulaverse! Trina is an incredible writer and a fabulous person.

I forgot to mention this earlier, but this fire lookout/proposal story definitely made me cry when I read it this morning. 😊 So dang sweet.

I'm so glad you loved it -- and it was so great seeing you too -- even if it was just in the Costco parking lot. Can't wait for your art show!!
